I bet the majority of you thought you were going to see a smokin’ hot housekeeper, chef, butler, or nanny huh? Sorry to lead you on, but this “smokin’” is in reference to the “smoker”; you know the one that smokes cigarettes (Newport, Marlboro, Lucky Strike, etc.). Anyway, we get many clients that call us and request that whatever candidate we send be a non-smoker. We have actually had people that were right for the job, had a great personality and the perfect fit lose out because they smoked. The client will say, “I smelled them as soon as they [ Read the rest…]
Often times we hear all the stories about how clients treat their household staffing horribly. Its nice to know that some people care and realize how important their domestic caretakers are. Treat them kindly. Kris Kristofferson sang his classic “Why Me” for a very special audience — of one — this week. The country legend was in Texas for Willie Nelson’s annual Fourth of July picnic, and also paid a visit to his former nanny: 93-year-old Juanita Cantu, who helped raise Kristofferson and his siblings in Brownsville, Texas. In an ideal world, household staff will all get along. But when clashes arise over who left the kitchen a mess or who is getting preferential treatment from the parents, all hell can break loose. Lesley Kring thought she had the perfect nanny gig: A $75,000 salary, generous health benefits and vacation time, even her own pool house on the family’s Rye, N.Y., estate. She had such a close, loving relationship with the four children in her charge that she was often mistaken for their mother. Ms. Kring was excited when she learned the stay-at-home mom she worked for wanted [ Read the rest…]

All was going as good as could be. Julie was being interviewed by Mr. & Mrs. French. The three were chatting for about 45 minutes. Mom & Dad even brought their cute 4 year old to meet and talk to Julie. All were very relaxed, with Julie going over her past experience and answering all questions asked. Mr. & Mrs. French had already begun to think about a start date. They liked Julie. They can tell she knew her job, was sincere and liked the questions she had asked. Many nannies today aren’t the only household employee working in a home. It’s not unusual for a family to also employ a housekeeper, a household manager, a cook and other people to help them manage the day to day tasks that come with running a home and caring for a family. While having a co-worker can be a welcome relief to the isolation that often comes with having a household job, it can be challenging to work alongside other employers in the home environment. Here are some tips for being successful when you’re part of a household staff. Keep the [ Read the rest…]
As we’ve mentioned here before, there are two basic types of nanny resumes you can use: chronological, which charts your career path in order (starting with your most recent job) before briefly discussing your skills, and functional, which emphasizes competencies and achievements before a shorter by-the-numbers account of where you’ve worked. They’re both workable solutions, and you should see which one works best for you in a given situation. If you’re looking at using a functional resume — also called a skills-based resume — you’re probably asking yourself what exactly you should cover. What kind of skills belong on such a [ Read the rest…]
I’ve found the majority of my clients have found (learned) ways of making tons of money…. but along with this comes the “Frankenstein”…… the 15,000 + sq ft house or apartment. The 2nd and 3rd (many times more) properties. Boats, planes and a fleet of cars. But these are still family units, with the same basic needs of all families, compounded now with complications of all the toys mentioned above. It’s a “monster” resulting from hard work, success & choice of lifestyle. Now eight or more bathrooms need cleaning, four or more beds need be stripped and made if not [ Read the rest…]
