Hidden Danger in Popular Children’s Foods That Nannies Should Avoid!

Being a nanny is serious work, you’re not just watching over a child. Being a nanny means you have a vital role in developing that young child into a healthy upstanding adult. As a nanny it’s your responsibility to promote and manage the child’s activity & nutrition. Doing so helps set the child on their way to an active healthy life. Every week I will list a couple of key steps and points to monitor while on the job.

To begin with, be wary of content in packaged foods. Packaged foods are incredibly convenient. They require little work/preparation & save time, however upon closer inspection you’ll see that there are hidden consequences to easy consumption. Take soda for example, the sweet refreshing drink most come to know and love. The hidden danger in soda lies in how sweet it tastes. For many folks its easy to think standard sugar gives soda that sweet pop, the bad truth is simpler than that.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is the main ingredient in most soda brands consumed today. HFCS is a sweetener produced from corn starch & what makes this dangerous is that HFCS is an ingredient that can trick you into consuming more than you need of it. It’s a simple sugar that gets broken down so rapidly, all of a sudden you crave more. You ingest more and more yet wont feel full, all those calories you easily consumed have to go somewhere right?

That somewhere tends to be body fat. HFCS has been linked to problems such as childhood obesity, early diabetes, & heart disease. It’s unfortunate how easily packaged this ingredient is in the market. HFCS is available in everyday items such as:

  • Soda
  • Kid’s Yogurt
  • Canned Fruit
  • Juice
  • Breakfast Cereal
  • Sports Drinks
  • Frozen Foods

One way I monitor my foods/drinks to be sure I’m not consuming any HFCS or unneeded sugars is being sure the product has less than 15 grams of sugar in a giving serving. Opt for water & unsweetened teas, if you must satisfy your sweet tooth do it with natural fruit & or honey. Use real sugars instead of heavily processed sugars if you must satisfy a sweet tooth.

HFCS is a cheaper alternative to standard sugar that many companies take advantage of. Don’t let the children you care for consume something so cheap, its negatives outweigh any positives that food may have. Be wary of nutrition labels, you must inspect them closely to be sure there aren’t any unwanted preservatives or sugars you would want consumed.
