Spooky season is upon us. Halfway into October and the leaves are changing colors, pumpkins have faces, and children are deciding just what tiny terror they’d like to be at the end of the month. The Halloween season is a great time of year for nannies to take the children they care for out on eerie adventures. For those of us that reside in NYC, we’re lucky to have the city hosting wonderful events for all children. Listed below are a couple of great child friendly Halloween activities across different NYC neighborhoods:
Spooky Pumpkin Garden at the NY Botanical Garden
Scramble among scary scarecrows and frightful pumpkins in this spooky garden that’s fun for all. Go through scary story puppet shows, learn about bats, and visit on weekends to see pumpkin carving demos by professionals that will inspire you to make your own frightful creations. Get there on October 20 and 21 for the Great Pumpkin Weekend, when some really impressive large pumpkins will be on display for photo ops.
Boo at the Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo
Determine fact from myth learning about bats and their homes — including Prospect Park’s urban bats. Go on a scavenger hunt and participate in Halloween-themed scary arts and crafts.
Fall Fest, Hudson River Park
Stop by Pier 25 for a seasonal carnival celebrating all things fall! Enjoy magic shows, face painting, cotton candy, themed story time, pumpkin decoration, rides, and more.
Halloween Harvest Festival
This year’s festival is inspired by Fet Gede, the Haitian Festival of the Ancestors. Learn about the culture through performances, song workshops, card readings, and much more. Of course, enjoy the traditional Halloween fare, too: costumes, face painting, pet blessings, and to top it all off a DOG COSTUME CONTEST.
Halloween Pumpkin Flotilla in Central Park
This one might just be the coolest. Create a floating jack o’ lantern display in Central Park’s Harlem Meer. You’ll have to bring your own pumpkin so come with the best pumpkin you can find and spend an evening carving it in your spooky costumes. Then, send the pumpkins floating on the water and watch them light up the evening with creepy smiles.
