Nanny Holiday Activities!

There’s that happy feeling going around. December’s a beautiful time as the holidays bring close family and friends to celebrate the end of a prosperous year and the hope a new one soon brings. With so much joy in the air, there are many opportunities for nannies to create wonderful holiday memories with the children they care for.

Living in New York City everyone knows to check out the Rockefeller Christmas tree but it can get very congested and may not be the best space for little ones depending on the time of day. Lighter but similar options would be seeing other trees placed throughout the city. South street seaport sets up a picturesque tree right in the center of the shopping square that has plenty of shops along with a movie theater. Not far from the South Street tree stands the New York Stock exchange Christmas tree. Historic in its own right, standing every year since 1923.

Every nanny, especially those working in the upper east side of Manhattan should take advantage of the season and take the children on a walk along park avenue. With almost 2 miles worth Christmas trees up, park avenue has been an under the radar holiday attraction for many years now.

Not all of the city’s lights are up on trees, other attractions for the children include taking them to the Winter Village in Bryant Park, over one hundred & fifty cozy shops with vendors from across the state selling holiday goods, with the background a large ice skating ring in front of the iconic New York Public Library. Further up in midtown the central park conservancy sets up charmingly by decorating the Charles A. Dana Center with classic lights carrying on a 20 plus year holiday run.

In another area of New York City, the lights in this neighborhood might be bright enough to see from space. Dyker Heights in Brooklyn is home to the most festive residential holiday displays the city can offer. Immense houses with every square inch covered in holiday displays and lights, placing children in a movie set environment. You can see these lights from 83rd-86th street, across 11th-13th avenues.

The parents of these children will definitely envy the nanny that takes their children on these sight seeing trips. The holidays bring busier times for them as some work with the household staff to set their own homes up to celebrate the season. Nannies should also get the parents involved in these activities to help strengthen that employer to employee bond. Once the parents have the time, it would be nice to bring them along with the children to see popular Christmas trees in museums like the American Museum of National History museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Museum of National history sets up it’s pristine origami tree. Their holiday staple since the 80’s is adorned with over 800 hand folded paper models created by pros and children alike. Across the park in the Met stands a tall blue spruce ornamented with 18th century angel ornaments. At it’s base, an extensive nativity scene with recorded holiday music adding to the environment.

These sights seeing trips would go a long way in creating a perfect Christmas season for the children you care for and may even bring nannies a festive holiday bonus.

Happy Holidays!!

Glenn began in the “family business” more than 30 years ago, by coming to work for his Father, Martin Greenhouse. He often recounts how nervous he was, when at 19 years old his Father forced him to pick up the phone and speak with David Suskind. This was to be the first of dozens of phone calls and meetings to come for Glenn……with Celebrity Clientele. Glenn considers himself very fortunate to have spent his life working at a job he truly loves and as he puts it: “earn a comfortable living at the same time.”
